The Little Campus That Could: Survey Results Inform Postsecondary Education in an Island Community [Scholarly Article - Planning for Higher Education Journal, 2022]

The Little Campus That Could: Survey Results Inform Postsecondary Education in an Island Community

Planning for Higher Education Journal, Volume 50, Number 4, July - September 2022

Abstract:
In 2018, the Institutional Effectiveness Office at Kaua‘i Community College developed and administered community and workforce surveys to better understand current and future educational needs of residents and employers on Kaua‘i. These single island surveys highlighted the need for a comprehensive neighbor island survey to collectively advocate for additional online post-associate degree programs that best align with and support these geographically isolated communities. This project demonstrates how surveys can be used to inform decisions and integrated planning across multiple scales within a university system, especially in regards to distance education.

Community engagement: Barriers and drivers in South African higher education [Scholarly Article - South African Journal of Higher Education, 2020]

Title:
Community engagement: Barriers and drivers in South African higher education

Author:
B.J. Johnson

Published:
South African Journal of Higher Education, Volume 34, Number 6, 2020

Abstract:
Community engagement professionals experience numerous barriers even though community engagement is the third mission of the university alongside first, teaching and learning, and second, research. Community engagement professionals often refer to community engagement as the “stepchild” of higher education. Yet there are also inter-related successful drivers. This article identifies the barrier–driver duality and makes a case for their systemic interconnectedness, an area that has thus far been underexplored. A prominent barrier for community engagement professionals is that there is a lack of substantive conceptualisation of community engagement, intensified by the contradictory placing of community engagement within community and university structures. Interconnected to such barriers, prominent drivers demonstrate the value of scholarly, reflective practice and to enhance the leadership role of the South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum, inclusive of the views of pertinent members such as academic leaders, students and communities.

Scholarly Article (March 2002) - Rewiring higher education for the Sustainable Development Goals: the case of the Intercultural University of Veracruz, Mexico

Title:
Rewiring higher education for the Sustainable Development Goals: the case of the Intercultural University of Veracruz, Mexico

Authors:
Cristina Perales Franco & Tristan McCowan

From the abstract:
In the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, higher education has been given a key role in addressing societal challenges, reducing poverty, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and protecting the natural environment. Yet there has been a singular lack of imagination as regards the institutional forms that might help support this vision. This article reports on the findings of an exploratory qualitative case study of the Intercultural University of Veracruz, one of a number of institutions created in Mexico to ensure access for indigenous populations, to promote local development and to provide a space for intercultural dialogue.
