With just 15 months before the next election, Hungary’s government has pressed ahead with its radical transformation of the country’s universities, putting half under the control of Fidesz-controlled asset management foundations.
 
Hungary’s three biggest universities outside of Budapest received an unexpected ‘gift’ from the government before Christmas. The Universities of Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs were given two weeks to decide if they wished to join the government push to privatise higher education, transforming them from state-funded institutions into private foundations governed by a board of trustees.
