ShanghaiRanking Consultancy: 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has just made available the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This ranking lists the top 1,000 universities worldwide, based on:

• Quality of Education: Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals - Alumni (10%)
• Quality of Faculty: Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20%) and Highly Cited Researchers (20%)
• Papers published in Nature and Science (20%)
• Research Output: Papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20%)
• Per Capita Performance: Per capita academic performance of an institution (10%)

The top position in this ranking was taken by Harvard University, followed by Stanford University. 

Eight South African universities are found under the top 1,000 universities, namely:

1. University of Cape Town
2. University of the Witwatersrand
3. University of Pretoria
4. Stellenbosch University
5. University of KwaZulu Natal
6. University of Johannesburg
7. North-West University
8. University of South Africa
